Hi!
We recently were able to see the northern lights from our property!
My dad and brother were away on a trip so they unfortunately missed it. My mom, sister and I were just chilling, watching a show on the TV. Thankfully, a friend of ours, who’s been into the northern lights, was messaging my mom and saying how we should be able to see them from where we live. Mom got up a looked a little but sat back down.
Eventually, she decided to go out and look properly. We put the camera up to the sky with the certain settings we needed and WOW- there they were! It was so amazing! You could see them slightly with your eyes, especially when the color was brighter you could see the faint color in the sky but through the camera you could see them so much brighter and better! The difference was crazy!
We were giddy and in awe! My sister and I have never seen them before, our mom had when she was in Alaska with our dad, years ago. It didn’t feel real and we were in such delight!
We went back and forth from the deck which was where we were originally, and the driveway. Our mom messaged some friends, some of whom were seeing them as well. She also messaged some of our neighbors. A couple neighbors from across where we live, the mom and one of her sons- he’s probably about eight- asked if they could come up our driveway to see them better. So we got to talk with them a bit.
They were stunning. It was so amazing to see them from our property and I’m very glad to have shared that experience with Mom and Ro!
What’s something you liked about it (and why)? I just loved seeing the northern lights so bright from our cameras! Especially that it was on our own property… so amazing! It didn’t feel real! They were so beautiful, I especially liked that there was the green but also a gorgeous pink.
It was also neat that you could see them slightly with your own eyes- when the color was especially bright you could tell that was the case from looking at it on your own. There were a few times when the sky had a deep red to it, we put the camera up and the color was just soooo bright and brilliant! At times, looking up at the sky with just our eyes, we’d be like, “Oh, it looks like something is going on there!”.
I liked how they would move quickly too, it felt like they were alive and they kept changing! That added a neat vibe to it.
The answer the “why”, I liked seeing them because we’ve all seen pictures of the northern lights but to have them actually in front of you, let alone on your property, it’s just really surreal. And of course I liked them because they were so gorgeous. They were brighter and more beautiful than I usually picture them as.
What’s something you disliked about it (and why)? It’s weird that we as humans see something for the first time that’s new and exciting and beautiful and we love looking at it. But then after some time, it’s not new and exciting anymore. You don’t really care about it anymore. I felt like that happened with these, for me at least, after a while of being in delight of them.
I dislike that about us because we take for granted amazing things and we’re selfish. But then again I don’t know how much I want it to be different- because I don’t know if I’d want to stare at it forever and have to be dragged away from it or something like that, either.
I also was expressing myself kind of weird and had a weird vibe that night, not super noticeable to others but mainly myself, so I wish I wouldn’t have been like that because it may have been kind of sinful and it was unnecessary.
What was your biggest takeaway or lesson? I think it’s that when someone is insistent on something, especially something you need to check out, listen to them! I’m so grateful for our friend urging us to check it out and I’m grateful my mom decided to listen and go look. We probably would have missed them and since my mom messaged people, they maybe would have missed it as well!
What is something you’re curious to learn more about as a result of this experience? I think I’d like to learn more about Alaska! I know there’s a lot more to learn about Alaska that doesn’t have to do with the northern lights so I’m not sure if this counts. But seeing them gave me a taste of that vibe and got me interested in learning more about Alaska- that is one of the bucket list trips of my family’s!
Thank you for reading!
